Adventure to the Acropolis and Parthenon in Athens

As we traveled to the beautiful country of Greece we had to stop in Athens and see the famous Acropolis. It stood high above everything else. At night the lights would brighten up the majestic monument. During the day it was pretty hot outside and we had to put on our hiking boots in order to climb up to see the Parthenon. The structure had been destroyed and while we were there we observed several cranes. We were informed that they were restoring parts of it but will never have it completely rebuild because then that would also be changing history.

It amazed us how these huge boulders were brought all the way up the the mountain. We were informed that the ancient Greeks had a system to carry these large boulders. They used placed trees on the ground and would roll the boulders one by one over the trees that they used as wheels. Also one theory on how they were able to put one boulder over the other to create such a high structure was after each boulder they placed they would put earth around it so that they could put the next. So literally they covered each column with dirt and after they got to the top, they would have to remove the dirt. Estimates is that it took about 20 years to complete the structure.

Truly amazing experience and if you are in Athens you must go visit the Acropolis and see the Parthenon. We loved the Greek culture and especially the food. One of our private tours told us that just about everything some how came from the Greeks, from words, to food, to sports. So in the words of the famous movie, “My big Fat Greek Wedding,” “So there you go.”
